Amazon/UPS Overcharging Return Shipping

This is crazy... Amazon/UPS are ripping us off with return shipping costs.

We shipped an item by USPS Ground Advantage, with the dimensions and weight of:

LxWxH: 12" x 4.5" x 4.5"

Weight: 1 lb.

It cost us $10.88 to ship to the customer.

The customer returned the item to us, and after checking our Returns report, Amazon has charged us $16.21 for the return shipping costs. We opened a case with Amazon seller support, and their reasoning was because the carrier audited weight for this item is 14 LB. This is a complete LIE! They are lying straight to our face! The package details directly on UPS for the tracking number shows 2.7 lb! See attached image!

Per Amazon, the carrier uses dimensional weight which is calculated by (LxHxW)/139 for returns.

As I mentioned above, the shipping dimensions were 12" x 4.5" x 4.5", 1lb. The customer returned it in the SAME box we shipped it (the same dimensions and weight).

Per their provided formula (12" x 4.5" x 4.5") / 139 = 1.748 lb.

1.7 is exactly what we calculated at the time it was shipped to the customer. See attached image of the packing slip.

Round up to 2 or 3 lb if you want.

Per their policy on Shipping costs for seller-fulfilled returns: https://sellercentral.amazon.com/help/hub/reference/G202103400

An item with weight 2+ to 3 lb, the appropriate charge for the UPS return label should be $5.42.

Even if it actually did weigh 14 lb like they fabricated, the cost should be $8.39. Yet they charged us $16.21!! To justify that charge according to their provided table, the item's dimensional weight would have to be 38 lb!

This is total insanity. How can they get away with this?! It's a literal scam.

What is the listed packaging weight and dimensions on the ASIN? That's the data Amazon uses to create the return shipping label.

We have the same problem with almost 100% of UPS returns. We have to open a safety claim on every single one but have been successful on about every one.

Happening with everybody unfortunately , doesnot look like we have anywhere to go - for each and every return. This is getting very insane

Amazon fails in many ways due to chaotic change. Then they fix the problems that cost Amazon money first, hoping to get to the problems that cost sellers money later. In the interim, they "improve" (break) more things, and eventually seller-hostile bugs accrete. It's only going to get worse. Sorry you're dealing with this. Wait until they add the surcharges for fuel, etc. 30 days after the return (read the return shipping charge policy -- they explicitly mention these charges and say they will not pay them, even though it's their carppy coding that's responsible).

Hello @Seller_xomj0HvkVtoEJ. I asked our partner team to review your recent return shipping label fee as well as the carrier adjustment.

Please note that the carrier adjustment credited back some of the original label cost paid for the return shipping label.

As for the shipping fee, there may be additional charges beyond the base rate. The most common charge reported by sellers is: UPS Remote Area Surcharges and Prepaid Return Labels.

UPS applies Area Surcharges to product return shipments going to "less accessible" ZIP codes, as determined by UPS. You can visit the UPS website and search for the "Area Surcharge ZIP Code Listing 2024" spreadsheet for the complete list.

We have been running into the same issue multiple times a week for a few months now. We have opened Safe-T claims citing how much Amazon's return shipping policy says we should be charged vs. what we were actually charged, and almost every time, we are credited.

The only instances where the Safe-T claims are being denied are when the Amazon rep claims the item is eligible for free returns. This is a complete lie for our category but that's a different issue.

I suggest you try the Safe-T claim route. Good luck!
