how are sellers able to offer free shipping AND sell books for like $5? If i'm doing my my math correctly that means that amazon takes $0.75 plus $1.80 if the seller is a pro merchant. This leaves the seller $2.45 revenue. The cheapest i can ship a book is $3.87 media mail if the book is <1lb which would put the seller at -$1.42 profit for the sale.
What am i missing?

They probably sell enough books to qualify for better shipping rates by doing presorting to get bulk rates. Even at that they’re probably only making pennies on those books. I also think those big mega sellers pay smaller fees to Amazon than us smalller sellers.
