Do Books Pose Increased Risk of Bodily Harm or Property Damage?

We have, for the second time, received an email from Amazon, the gist of which is conveyed by the sentence: "Given that you sell products that may pose increased risk of bodily injury or property damage, we request that you provide proof of commercial liability insurance by April 30”. We never have, and never will, sell anything on Amazon except used books. Does anyone have any advice on how we can convey that fact to Amazon?

That's definitely frustrating! It seems like a generic message sent in error. You might want to respond directly to Amazon Seller Support, clearly stating that your inventory consists solely of used books, which pose no risk of bodily harm or property damage. Hopefully, they'll update their records accordingly.

If books pose a risk of bodily harm, then so does every single product sold on Amazon. We have not received this email, yet, and I have no idea how I would respond.

"we request that you provide proof of commercial liability insurance by April 30”. "

Start with THIS. The insurance requirement has been buried in that agreement that we all 'signed' when we opened out accounts. They USED to only hit up people that sold over $10,000 in a month. Once that number is hit the requirement is there forever. NOW they are expanding and targeting sellers at many levels. Just weeding the garden of small pests (sellers).

" Does anyone have any advice on how we can convey that fact to Amazon? "

Don't waste your time. I'm sure over the past 20+ years they have been threatened and possibly even sued for paper cuts, dust and pollen allergy reactions due to stuff that was on the books, black mold, and other things.

Once they want it they will get it or usher you to the door.

NOTE -- if you are doing FBA start with removal orders NOW so that you won;t be getting billed later if you don't get the coverage.

It can cost from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on your sales volume.

Mine this year (small volume seller) is about $900 and most of my sales are not books!

every ecommerce site requires you to upload insurance documents. We do this for walmart, amazon seller, wayfair, etc. Its not a big deal and almost every business already has business insurance already.

I believe we have had to show proof of insurance before as well, although it has been a while. I think the only way to get around that is to show proof of insurance.

You may be a victim of misclassified books or ones whose title triggered a bot response, though liability insurance is a good idea in any case.
