What a lucky buyer. He got EXCESSIVE REFUND!!

Customer messaged us and he didnt receive his package on time and requested partial refund

We issued $10 partial refund. Then he decided to return it and got a full refund so Amazon didnt see our $10 partial refund and applied full refund on top of the first $10 refund

We used Amazon shipping services and got shipping label from Amazon. It was claim and OTDR protected. Why am I paying all refund?? Why this customer got excessive refund?! Seller support didnt help me.

He spent $45.35 for this order and got refund $55..35. IS IT FAIR?!

I'm sure there are exceptions, but generally speaking, there are two types of refunds in an Amazon order: a refund for a return, and a discretionary refund.

It sounds like you issued a discretionary refund. (Just opened the order, process a partial refund) This is not visible to, or taken into consideration by, the automated Amazon returns system. All that system cares about is if a refund was processed under the return request - yes or no. I don't think they'll change this.

Not much you can do to appeal this - a discretionary refund is generally always risky as a buyer can do exactly what yours did.

Next time this situation happens:

Assuming you used Amazon buy-shipping and shipped on-time (there is a carrier scan showing they are in possession of the parcel on or before ship-by date) you might be better served to recommend the buyer open an A to Z claim to get their shipping costs covered. This is what Buy-Shipping is meant to protect you against.

If you did not use Amazon buy-shipping, you can try asking the buyer to open a return request so you can process the partial refund in the return system that way. Your mileage may vary here, and this option is not without it's own risks, (the buyer may get upset/not understand and leave neg feedback, etc.) so proceed with caution.

I'm sorry this happened to you. At least it wasn't as bad as it could have been. When this happened to us, we were out more $$ than $10 and I've never forgotten the lesson learned that day.
